Can I Have a Side of Discipline Please?
I am not an expert when it comes to setting goals. I have been the king at saying I am going to do something and never doing it. One day I found myself thinking, I need to start doing more with my life. All I do is work, come home, eat, sleep, then hit repeat. How many times have you told yourself that you were going to do something and never followed through with it? As we all know, it is so much easier to talk the talk, but often times difficult to walk the walk.
As the new year approaches, many of you have probably found yourself saying, "This is the year I will (fill in the blank). Did you find yourself saying these same words at the beginning of 2010 or at some other point in your life? Why didn't you fulfill these tasks? The answer: DISCIPLINE! You made the choice to not have discipline and therefore you are setting the same goals once again. No one ever said that setting and following through with goals was easy. As the saying goes, "If it was easy, everyone would do it." Well this is your time to shine; this is when you will set amazing goals and have amazing results!
We are very familiar with the Nike's slogan, "Just do it!" For only three words, these are very powerful. I am going to provide you some pointers so that you can now "do it!"

- The first and most obvious is establishing what you want to accomplish.
- You next need to do some research for the best way to approach this task. Let's say you want to start reading more. You might need time management education to assist you in finding time throughout the day to read.
- You need some sort of accountability. This is going to make you work harder and serve as a constant reminder of your task. I suggest utilizing a close friend or family member. Announce to them your goal and let them know you would like him/her to hold you to it.
- You need a purpose. What is driving you to establish this goal? What is your expected outcome?
- You need a deadline. If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it.
AWESOME TIP: Go and purchase a dry erase board ($5.00 at Wal-Mart). Hang it in your room and write out your goals. Then write out your deadlines. Take a few minutes each morning to read these goals and ask yourself, "What can I do today to accomplish these?"
So when's the best time to set goals? RIGHT NOW! I challenge you to go out and "JUST DO IT!" Do not wait until tomorrow or next year. Best of luck of my friends.
